Background of the Study
Rhetorical coherence is essential for effective public communication, particularly in political contexts where clarity and persuasion are paramount. In Maiduguri, Hausa public speeches are renowned for their structured argumentation and strategic use of rhetorical devices that ensure message clarity and audience engagement (Abdullahi, 2023). These speeches typically employ logical structuring, repetition, and transitional phrases that enhance the flow and persuasiveness of the discourse. The integration of traditional oratory practices with modern rhetorical techniques reflects a sophisticated adaptation to contemporary communication demands (Haruna, 2024). Public speakers in Maiduguri are adept at using culturally resonant references and idiomatic expressions that not only capture attention but also reinforce the collective values of the community. The study explores how rhetorical coherence is achieved in Hausa public speeches by analyzing the interplay between linguistic structures, thematic organization, and performance elements. Such an evaluation is critical to understanding the efficacy of public discourse in influencing public opinion and shaping political narratives (Abdullahi, 2023; Haruna, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of rhetorical coherence in public speeches, there is limited focused research on its manifestation in Hausa public speeches in Maiduguri. Existing studies tend to generalize about public discourse without isolating the specific rhetorical strategies that contribute to coherence and persuasive impact (Yusuf, 2024). This oversight limits the ability to critically assess how structured discourse affects audience interpretation and political engagement. Furthermore, rapid changes in political communication necessitate a closer examination of traditional rhetorical practices in contemporary contexts. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the rhetorical coherence of Hausa public speeches and identifying the key elements that underpin effective communication.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the rhetorical devices used in Hausa public speeches.

  2. To analyze the structural elements that contribute to discourse coherence.

  3. To assess the impact of rhetorical coherence on audience engagement.

Research Questions

  1. What rhetorical devices are predominantly used in Hausa public speeches?

  2. How do these devices contribute to overall coherence?

  3. What is the impact of rhetorical coherence on audience perception?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of rhetorical coherence in Hausa public speeches, highlighting the fusion of traditional and modern oratory techniques. The insights obtained will enhance understanding of effective public communication and contribute to improved speechwriting and delivery practices. The research is valuable for political analysts, communication scholars, and practitioners interested in the art of persuasive public speaking (Abdullahi, 2023; Haruna, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the evaluation of rhetorical coherence in Hausa public speeches delivered in Maiduguri and does not extend to other public communication contexts.

Definitions of Terms
